The ‘robot umpire’ has lifted the veil a bit. The Automatic Ball-Strike System (ABS) was tested before the Asian Professional Baseball Championship (APBC) 2023 teams were evaluated. For now, the evaluation is ‘on hold’.
The APBC team played its first exhibition game against Sangsung at Daegu Samsung Lions Park on Aug. 8. The result was a 10-3 victory. It’s been a while since we’ve played, but it wasn’t bad.
Almost all members of the national team played. After asking for their permission, we also included some players from the national team in the lineup. Overall, the hitting wasn’t too bad, and the mound was good.
Wins and losses weren’t important anyway. The goal was to find the feeling of the game. Before the game, coach Ryu Jung-il said, “Many of the players have been playing for more than 20 days. We need to focus on the feeling.”
Of course, it’s not all about the first drink. After the game, coach Ryu Jung-il pointed out that the players were not yet warmed up. He also pointed out that the national team pitchers didn’t score many runs when they threw.
In any case, it was not a bad trial. There was one other aspect of the game that caught my eye: the robot umpires. It was called by ABS.
Before the game, an official from the Korean Baseball Organization (KBO) said, “We decided to use ABS in the practice games against Sangsung on the 8th and 11th. It is a system that will be introduced from next year. It is the closest zone to the rules,” he explained.
“We thought it was okay for the players who came to the national team to experience it first. We felt it was necessary to provide it quickly. The system is in place,” he added.
The KBO has already confirmed the introduction of ABS for the 2024 season. On October 19, the KBO announced, “We plan to introduce ABS and PitchClock to the KBO League in the 2024 season and will build related facilities and systems.” 무지개토토 주소
It has been operated in stages in the Futures League since 2020. We have advanced the system and decided it is time to introduce it to the first team.
First, the ABS system was tested by umpires in the Korean Series. It wasn’t used in the game, but the umpires were seen sitting in the stands behind the catcher to check it out.
ABS was also used during the APBC National Team Trials. The more you test, the better. After the game, there were mixed reactions.
