‘Final goal’ Lee Jae-sung gives sagging club ‘first league win in seven months’

Mainz 05 midfielder Lee Jae-sung’s second goal of the season came when he needed it most.

Mainz defeated RB Leipzig 2-0 in the 10th round of the 2023-2024 German Bundesliga at the Meba Arena in Mainz, Germany, on Thursday.

Mainz have been in a very bad mood lately, going into the ninth round of the Bundesliga without a win this season. With three draws and six losses, they were in last place. Their winless streak from the end of last season stretched to 14 games. Since their stunning 3-1 win over Bayern Munich in April, they had drawn four and lost 10.

Including cup competitions, it was even worse. Their only win of the season came in the first round of the DFB-Pokal (German FA Cup), a 1-0 victory over 2.Bundesliga side Elbersberg. In the second round of the Pokal against Leipzig, the team suffered a 0-3 defeat at the hands of fellow second-tier side Hertha BSC.

Head coach Bo Svensson took the blame and stepped down. Svensson, who took over at Mainz in January 2021, was the hero of Mainz’s relegation from the bottom of the table in the 2020-2021 season. He brought in the likes of Lee Jae-sung after his first season and has led the team to eighth and ninth place finishes in the last two seasons. Unusually for a manager leaving due to poor performance, Svensson said goodbye to the fans through the club’s channels, and the fans expressed their sadness at the inevitable departure.

The game against Leipzig was as much of a must-win as ever. We needed three points to avoid the bottom of the table. They were also desperate for a victory that would not be a farewell to coach Svensson, who still had a lot of “thanks, Bo” hangers-on. They also needed to turn the tide after nearly seven months without a win.

In a must-win game against a tough Leipzig side, Lee Jae-sung was the man to do it. Lee opened the scoring in the 31st minute of the second half. Karim Onisibo broke down the right side of the pitch and sent in a cross that Lee Jae-sung headed home. The ball bounced off the ground and into the back of the net. It was Lee’s second goal of the season. Lee’s goal proved to be the game-winner as Mainz went on to win the match without conceding a goal.

Outside of the scoring situation, Lee’s dedication to the game was evident. He ran over 12 kilometers and was the fastest player on the team at 32.08 km/h. He was also the player who worked the hardest to score. Two of Mainz’s three team shots on goal were on target. 무지개토토 도메인

Lee’s dedication and goal secured the three points for Mainz and helped them avoid the bottom of the table. They leapfrogged Cologne, who they drew with in round 10, to 17th place. The gap between them and 15th-placed Darmstadt, who remain outside the relegation zone, is now one point.
