Shin Min-hyuk, ‘5⅔ innings of scoreless relief in PS debut’: “I was nervous but not shaking”

“I was nervous coming to the ballpark in the morning, but I wasn’t that nervous”

NC Dinos’ Shin Min-hyuk started the game against SSG Landers in the first round of the 2023 Shinhan Bank SOL KBO League postseason semifinals at SSG Landers Field in Incheon on April 22 and pitched 5⅔ innings of scoreless baseball with four hits, one walk, and three strikeouts.

Shin, who made his postseason debut that day, did not get the win, but he held SSG scoreless until the bottom of the sixth inning, setting the stage for the NC victory. NC went on to win 4-3, thanks in large part to Shin’s performance.

In a postgame interview, Shin said, “I think that trying to increase my strikeout rate and make it a quick game led to good results. I was nervous when I came to the ballpark in the morning (for my postseason debut), but I wasn’t that nervous. My changeup was good today,” he said.

Below is a one-on-one interview with Shin.

  • Game impressions

“I think my efforts to increase my strike rate and try to win the game quickly led to good results.

  • Were you nervous for your fall baseball debut?

I was nervous when I came to the ballpark in the morning, but I wasn’t that nervous.

  • There were some clutch situations in the third and fourth innings.

I tried to stay on track and induce ground balls, but it didn’t work out.

I wasn’t worried about the other pitcher. I was happy to be able to get on the mound quickly and throw.

  • What was the best pitch you threw today?

My changeup was good.

  • Were you disappointed that you didn’t finish the sixth inning?

I wasn’t disappointed at all. I was prepared to go down beforehand.

  • You’ve been pitching well since your last start of the season against KIA.

I was thinking about stepping up and making sure my shoulder didn’t open up completely, and I was looking at the catcher’s mitt and throwing. I think the increased percentage of first-pitch strikes has led to good results.
