The Wild Card Series is in its second year in Major League Baseball, and it’s already starting to get some tweaks.

Travis Schochick, a columnist specializing in Major League Baseball for The Score, wrote a column on Thursday, suggesting that the Wild Card Series should be revamped.

He suggested adopting the wild card system currently used in the KBO.

The KBO has a two-game wild-card series in which the fourth-place team starts with a one-game lead.
Shochik noted that this idea was proposed by the players’ union in past collective bargaining agreements and argued that it would give the top seeds an advantage.

He took it a step further with a somewhat radical proposal to bump the two wild-card games into one day as a doubleheader.

His format, dubbed “Wildcard Tuesday,” would see the three wildcard series played as doubleheaders, with a maximum of six games per day.

The main reason for his proposal is that it would shorten the rest period for the top seeded teams.

With the introduction of the best-of-three wild-card series, Major League Baseball has created a new problem for the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds in both leagues who advance to the division series.

This postseason, the Houston Astros were the only one of the four teams to make it to the Division Series. The Los Angeles Dodgers and Atlanta Braves were eliminated after reaching the Division Series for the second straight year.

Former Perfect Game pitcher Dallas Braden wrote on his X (formerly Twitter), “The Dodgers have never played a regular season schedule with only four games in 11 days. Two MVP candidates, Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman, are a combined 1-for-12. “It’s all about timing, and not playing at this point is a big deal,” he said of the impact of the break.

Shochik also cited data showing that in the 48 series since the Wild Card era, top-round teams with longer rest have won just 22 of 26 games in the first round, won the series just 20 times, and 18 of the 28 series losses have come to teams with worse records.
