‘Arsenal legend’ Martin Kieran has no choice but to recognize a changed Tottenham Hotspur.
Last season, Tottenham fell on hard times. They were curiously aiming to escape relegation under Antonio Conte and enjoyed a good start to the season. However, after the defeat to Sporting, they suffered a slump and never really rebounded. Conte came under fire several times over the course of the season, and was even rumored to be feuding with N’Golo Kante. In the end, Conte was relieved of his duties without completing the season, citing ‘poor performance’. Spurs were out of all cup competitions and finished a dismal eighth in the league.
The club decided to rebuild this summer. The vacant managerial position was filled by Enze Postecoglou, who won the Domestic Treble with Celtic, and the squad was bolstered by the likes of James Maddison, Manor Solomon, Mickey van der Vaart, Brennan Johnson, and Guglielmo Vicario. With the exception of the unavoidable departures of Harry Kane, Lucas Moura, and Harry Winks, we minimized departures.
And so the season began, and Tottenham went from strength to strength, contrary to pre-season expectations. Their only loss came in the League Cup against Fulham, but they are unbeaten in the league after six games. They beat ‘powerhouse’ Manchester United 2-0 at home and followed that up with a 5-2 thrashing at Burnley thanks to a Son Heung-min hat-trick. They also put in an equalizing performance away to Arsenal, a team that has long been a weak link, to earn a 2-2 draw.
Contrary to fears, Tottenham are doing well. It wasn’t just the results. Postecoglou has steadfastly maintained the “attacking football” he proclaimed before kickoff and has brought stability to a defense that has long been a liability. Van der Vaart and Christian Romero have been as solid as the Jan Vertonghen-Toby Alderweireld combination of yesteryear, while Vicario has replaced Hugo Lloris in goal after more than a decade in charge. Son Heung-min, transformed into a ‘top’, was at the peak of his goal-scoring powers, and Maddison, 메이저놀이터 the ‘freshman’, was in full ‘celebration mode’.
A completely different Tottenham. Even ‘rival’ Arsenal legend Kieran had to admit it. According to British outlet Team Talk, he said: “Spurs are going through a really transformative time. All the clouds over the club seem to have lifted. It’s liberating for the players to be told to play freely. Postecoglou takes good care of his players and, unlike Conte, believes in them.”
“The current Spurs team is playing with more attacking intent. The fans believe they can have a fantastic game against Liverpool. Tottenham Stadium is a completely different environment. There are no more toxins to intimidate them.”
