Kia Tigers left-hander Yang Hyun-jong, 35, gave up a bunch of runs, but was fortunate to get some help from the heavens to erase the record.
Yang Hyun-jong took the mound against the top-ranked LG Twins at Gwangju-Kia Champions Field on Aug. 8, giving up eight runs on nine hits (one walk) in two innings. Trailing 0-8, the game was halted due to a sudden downpour and a no-game was declared. Yang Hyun-jong’s start became a thing of the past.
His ordeal began in the first inning when he was hit by a single up the middle by Hong Chang-ki. The next batter, Moon Sung-ju, bunted toward first base and was hit by a single to right field by Kim Hyun-soo for the first run. Austin then gave up a single up the middle. She then caught Oh’s bunt and threw to third for one out.
However, he gave up a single to Moon Bo-kyung that went wide of the first baseman and a big hit to Park Dong-won that was caught in front of the center field fence, allowing the fourth run to score. Park Hae-min followed with a single to right field to extend the lead to five runs. The big inning was quickly surrendered as both batters hit hard to center field.
In the second inning, Shin Min-jae walked and made a great catch to prevent a stolen base, but Hong Chang-ki’s throw to first baseman Choi Won-joon was dropped behind the plate. Moon gave up back-to-back doubles to Moon Sung-ju and Kim Hyun-soo, and two batters later, he gave up an RBI single to Oh Ji-hwan for the eighth run. It was eight runs in two innings.
The defense didn’t help either. In the first inning, first baseman Choi Won-jun, who caught Moon Sung-joo’s safety bunt with one out, threw to pitcher Yang Hyun-jong instead of to the second baseman at the plate to keep the runner alive. Moon Bo-kyung followed with a quick single, but Choi’s glove position was not good enough. In the bottom of the second inning, Hong Chang-ki’s hard hit ball went behind the plate, allowing a run to reach second base.
His pitches were crowded and his fastball and changeup were not as powerful. He was shaken by aggressive hitting from the first pitch. In the second inning, 메이저놀이터 pitching coach Seo Jae-heng went up to talk to Yang Hyun-jong. I was expecting a hard plate, but I threw it anyway. He gave up a lot of runs, but he needed to digest the innings to prevent the bullpen from being used up from the first game of the week.Yang Hyun-jong had struggled with nine runs in two innings against Lotte on June 2 and seven runs in 4⅓ innings against SSG on June 7. He rebounded with one run in the fifth inning and four runs in the seventh inning. However, he failed to get a quality start for the fifth game in a row after his 6th inning (1 run) against KT on June 24, and suffered another massive loss on that day. It was another day he wanted to forget.
But then something unbelievable happened. At the end of the second inning, heavy rain fell while KIA was attacking, and the game was called off at 7:14. The referees waited, but the rain didn’t stop, and at 8:08, they declared a no-game. Yang’s record was erased. The heavens helped Yang Hyun-jong, and LG, who showed off a volcanic batting performance of nine hits, one walk and eight runs, blamed the heavens.
